"Don't Delay Arrival of Light Rail," says Kitchissippi Candidate Smallman

For Immediate Release
June 15, 2006

Vicky Smallman, candidate for councillor in Kitchissippi ward, today urged Ottawa city council to move ahead with a decision on Ottawa's light rail system following the release of the LRT proposal.

Smallman said it would be an expensive waste of time for council to postpone a decision until after the November elections. "Clearly it's important to get this project right from the start, and make sure all our questions and concerns are addressed," said Smallman. "But let's not lose momentum by imposing costly and unnecessary delays."

Smallman said the City carried out several years of consultation on the project, and held a rigorous bidding process. "The process could have been more transparent," she said. "But now that we have an opportunity to get information and provide feedback, we need to move forward. Residents, businesses, and councillors need to work hard in the next few weeks to learn what they can and make sure our concerns are addressed."

Smallman emphasized the benefits that the North-South Light Rail line will bring to Kitchissippi ward.
"With the addition of the Gladstone station, improvements at Bayview, and accompanying commercial, residential and recreational development along the line and around the stations, neighbourhoods that border the LRT will see real improvements. We'll have better transit access that will help get people out of their cars, and so much more. This is a smart move for Ottawa, and one that I support," Smallman said.

"The pilot project has shown that light rail works. Delay would only drive up the costs. Let's keep building and remember that long-term gains require smart long-term planning, not short-term politicking," Smallman said.
